Monroe poised for return to varsity football

Monroe High expects to play varsity football just two seasons after the formation of a modified team at the school in the Rochester School District.

Monroe High expects to play varsity football just two seasons after the formation of a modified team at the school in the Rochester School District.

One very long timeout is about to come to an end for Monroe High varsity football.

The Rochester School District high school expects to field a team this fall for the first time since the mid-1980s. School district and Section V officials still need to give approval, but Monroe has informed other schools inside and outside the Rochester City Athletic Conference to place the team on schedules for fall 2016.

“Everything is on schedule,” Monroe assistant principal and football coach Jason Muhammad said. “Very, very excited.

“I have boxes and boxes of Monroe gear that teachers have ordered, and it wasn’t a fundraiser.”

Monroe was one of three schools in the district to form modified-level teams for the first time in 2014. About 55 seventh and eighth-graders, including two girls, pulled on the pads and helmets that season. Encouraged by the turnout, Monroe officials added a junior varsity team that included students in the junior class this past season. Students at School Without Walls are eligible to join all three teams at Monroe.

“It was kind of, ‘let’s play a season, and see what happens,’ ” Monroe athletic director Greg Witman said. “After that first year, it was ‘Oh, boy.’ We all thought we’re ready to make the jump.

“It was pretty clear we were going to keep going. Honestly, I didn’t think it would happen this fast.”

The Monroe Redjackets’ return to varsity football won’t reverse another likely, slight decrease in the number of Section V teams. Section V Football chairman Dick Cerone said he projects a number in the high 60s, pending approvals of merged teams. There were 70 varsity teams this fall and 71 in 2014, according to Cerone.

Teams are grouped together in classifications for postseason play, based on student enrollment.

“I can’t even put a classification (chart) together,” Cerone said. “This is the longest I’ve gone without one. I’m not able to do much, there are so many changes.”

Monroe is expected to play in Class A, Cerone said. The number of football teams in the RCAC, known as the City-Catholic for decades, would increase to six.

“I go back to the days when there were eight teams in the city, and that was without Catholic schools,” Cerone said. “It’s declined so much over the years, it’s about time.”

Caledonia-Mumford and Bryon-Bergen plan to field varsity, JV and modified teams comprising  students from both schools this fall. Byron-Bergen was partnered with Elba in recent seasons. Fall cheerleading also will be a merged team.

Mike Reed, athletic director at Caledonia-Mumford, said about 25 players were on last season’s varsity football squad and the same number of students joined the modified “A” team. There have been no JV football teams at Caledonia-Mumford four of the last five years, according to Reed.

“We’re not able to fill all three levels,” Reed said.

The Livingston County Athletic Association will be asked to approve the merged Caledonia-Mumford/Byron-Bergen team next month,  followed by Section V. Reed added there is also hope to hire the team’s coach then. John Walther resigned after last season, his fifth as the Cal-Mum varsity coach.

Muhammad, who coached the Marshall varsity in the Rochester School District for nine seasons, coached the newest Monroe football teams each of the last two years. He expects to have at least 28 players with the Monroe varsity before official practices begin in August.

About 25 students played with the Monroe JV last season, while the total for modified went down to 25. Muhammad said the modified team would have had close to 40, but School Nos. 45 and 9 in the Rochester School District were no longer feeder schools for the program. School Nos. 5 and 16 continue to be partnered with Monroe.

“We feel that if we can get our partnerships solidified we’ll be fine,” Muhammad said. “We’ve established a protocol in the building, ‘this is how we do things, this is what we don’t do’,  It has to be right on the field, but it’s even more important that it’s right off the field.

When a teacher who has worked here for almost 20 years says this is the most school spirit she’s ever seen, that matters.
Jason Muhammad, Monroe assistant principal and football coach

“(The players) are not only seeing success on the field, they are leaders in ways they haven’t been in. Let’s say there is a conflict at school. In the past, these students would be spectators or participants. Now they are working to keep the peace. These guys stay together. When a teacher who has worked here for almost 20 years says this is the most school spirit she’s ever seen, that matters.”

Witman was a football coach at DePew in Section VI for more than a decade and the athletic director at North Tonawanda — also in the Buffalo-region — before taking his current position at Monroe in February 2014.

“The school spirit that comes with football and the pageantry that comes with it, we’ve already seen a difference,” Witman said. “We had kids come out to modified games, pretty good crowds.

“There’s no sport, if you can sustain it, that gets so many people involved. What I mean is that you have players. You have cheerleaders. There are kids performing halftime shows or selling items at the concession stands. There are kids who just come out to games to watch. You don’t get that with other sports.”

Brad Paddock, legendary wrestling coach in Warsaw, remembered for generosity

Ian Paddock never really began to do the math until people began arriving at his family’s home Wednesday.

His father, Brad Paddock, impacted the lives of many — especially in the world of wrestling, where it was said he would open his family’s home to anyone who loved the sport. Brad Paddock, 50, died Tuesday after multiple diseases caused organ failure over the course of about three weeks at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.

There has been an overwhelming amount of support — and plenty of phone calls, too — to the grieving Paddock family in Warsaw, Wyoming County.

Brad Paddock, shown here congratulating former Warsaw wrestler Ryan Coveny during the 2014 SuperSectionals, is remembered as an "incredible mentor,'' a motivator and someone with integrity by friend Robert Hirsch.

Brad Paddock, shown here congratulating former Warsaw wrestler Ryan Coveny during the 2014 SuperSectionals, is remembered as an "incredible mentor,” a motivator and someone with integrity by friend Robert Hirsch.

“It’s been non-stop support,” Ian Paddock, 25, said. “People are still coming, still calling.

“It shows you how much he meant to everyone. You don’t realize it at the time, but I’m glad to see how much he meant to everyone.”

It’s been non-stop support. People are still coming, still calling … It shows you how much he meant to everyone. You don’t realize it at the time, but I’m glad to see how much he meant to everyone.
Ian Paddock, 25

The Paddock family will have calling hours Saturday and Sunday, 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. each day, at Robinson and Hackemer Funeral Home in Warsaw. The funeral service is 1 p.m. Monday in Warsaw, at Valley Chapel Free Methodist Church.

Ian Paddock, a three-time high school state wrestling champion who once was Section V’s all-time wins leader, is one of nine children of Brad and Jeanie Paddock, ranging in age from 16 to 30 years old. Brad Paddock, who owned and operated a business that offered breeding services for livestock and dairy supplies, also is survived by two grandchildren.

“He’s an incredible mentor,” former Warsaw wrestling coach Robert Hirsch said. “He listens well. He speaks well. You talk about motivation — he’s one of the greats.

“I’m a pretty optimistic person. I’ve never taken something as hard as I’ve taken this. Brad and I would get together, and we just hanged. Our talks could go on for hours. A good man of God. He raised his family and lived with a biblical integrity.”

Hirsch, an assistant coach at Alfred State and Hornell High, taught eight of the nine Paddock children in classrooms and coached all of the wrestlers in the family.

He listens well. He speaks well. You talk about motivation — he’s one of the greats.
Robert Hirsch, former Warsaw wrestling coach

“That guy never seemed to stop,” Hirsch said.

A former wrestler at Perry, Brad Paddock became an assistant coach at Warsaw during the mid-1990s and began a wrestling club known as Team X that included wrestlers who went on to become All-Americans and state champions.

“Before Paul (the oldest of the six Paddock brothers) and I were on the varsity there was a pretty good heavyweight named Dave Leitton,” Ian Paddock said. “He would go and work with him everyday.”

Ian Paddock, who won 267 high school matches at Warsaw and was a national champion, remembers being introduced to wrestling at an early age. The sport had a grip on him, as he willingly and routinely wrestled in two age divisions at two youth tournaments on weekends.

“He would support us anyway that he could,” Ian Paddock said. “You are talking about driving to different tournaments every Saturday and Sunday, entry fees and hotel rooms.

“The more we put into it, the more he was going to put into it.”

Team X began as informal practices on Sundays at the Paddock family home. The original group of 10 would travel to tournaments, and the club became a magnet for some of the best wrestlers in the state.

“Anyone who wanted to work could come,” Ian Paddock said. “We had people fly in right before states to work out. My dad never charged anyone, and he paid people to come to do clinics.”

Avon athletic director and wrestling coach Andy Englert said that not many people know that Brad Paddock went to Russia to study the sport of wrestling.

He’s a hero and the world needs more of them. Hopefully, his story will inspire more people to step up.
Robert Hirsch

“He established that in his kids, to aim high,” Englert said. “That’s why they’ve reached levels that they have.”

The Livingston County News reported that 50 Team X wrestlers earned top-six finishes at the high school state championships, including 20 champions, and 30 earned All-America honors.

“Look at what his sons accomplished in the sport,” Section V wrestling executive committee member Frank Marotta said. “One went to Edinboro (Paul). One went to Ohio State (Ian) and one is at Iowa (Burke).”

It is Brad Paddock’s willingness to also aid wrestlers not named Paddock, sometimes by opening his wallet or finding his checkbook, why dozens of people have and will make their way to the Paddock home or reach out to the family.

“He’s a hero and the world needs more of them,” Hirsch said. “Hopefully, his story will inspire more people to step up.”

Difficult to overlook East in city hoops standings

East’s Theodore Buckner (5) turns and shoots over Wilson’s Donovan Campbell.

Even the mighty fall, is how East High boys basketball coach Darrell Barley put it, as he pointed out his team’s success.

No school has more Section V boys basketball championships than the 24 won by East. The team was in a state final four as recently as 2014. Barley has 229 coaching wins in 13-plus seasons at East.

Yet, East lost more than it won during the 2014-15 season, 12 out of 20 games. Barley remembers playing a game last season with seven players.

It was thought that Edison, Wilson and McQuaid had passed East, that is until the Eagles jumped out to a 5-0 start this winter. One of those wins came against Wilson, 64-54, on Dec. 15. Another, was versus Edison, 93-89, three days later.

Edison swept East High last season during Rochester City Athletic Conference play. Donte Crumpler, a 6-foot-5 senior forward, scored 40 points and grabbed 21 rebounds for Edison against East a week ago, but the Eagles still prevailed and has the top spot in the RCAC’s large-schools division.

East plays Churchville-Chili at 4 p.m. Dec. 28 during a tournament in Brockport.

“I’d rather for it to be like this,” Barley explained. “I know we have six players who are averaging in double-figures, and it hasn’t been like that since (East’s state final four appearance in 2010).

“We have a nice combination of multi-faceted players.”

Zion Morrison, a junior guard now listed at 6-3, is the scoring leader of East’s six-pack at 19.5 points a game. He had 29 points against Edison.

“He’s only 15 years old,” Barley said.

Below is a team capsule and the RCAC standings:

East High Eagles

Coach: Darrell Barley, 14th year (229 wins, 81 losses).

Last season’s record: 8-12, lost to Bishop Kearney, Class AA first round.

Classification: AA.

Starters back: Darrell Barley Jr., 6-0 senior, G; Dallas Stevens, 6-4, sr. G/F; Wendell Lucas, 6-1, jr. G; and Morrison, 6-3, jr. G.

Starting lineup: Theodore Buckner III, 6-4 sr., F/G; Barley, Stevens, Lucas and Morrison.

On the court: This is the first season of organized basketball for Buckner, according to Barley, who calls the player “a blessing in disguise” for his rebounding. There also is praise by Barley for sixth man Brandon Hunt, a 5-5 senior guard who transferred from University Preparatory Charter School for Young Men (UPrep). Hunt, who Barley said is too quick to be trapped by defenses, averages 10 points off the bench.

On the court: The Inventors are winners of their last five, before games against School of the Arts on Jan. 6 and at Wilson Jan. 8. … East High defeated Edison 93-89 Dec. 18. “It made us realize that we have to tighten up our defense,” Scott said. “We gambled so much.” Edison also missed 16 free throws, according to Scott. … Williams dealt with a bruised knee during the preseason to return to the starting lineup. … Leading scorers: Simkin (22 points per game), Crumpler (19 ppg.), and Redd (19 ppg.), who is 18 from his 1,000th.

Leadership Academy Lions

Coach: Reggie Simmons, third year (40-15).

Current record: 4-4.

Classification/2014-15 finish: B1/Section V champions lost to Syracuse Westhill in state semifinals.

Starters back: None.

Starting lineup: Tyriek Snow, 6-3, senior G; Tymeek Mackey, 6-1 jr. G; Dezmere Ellis, 5-9 soph. G; Tamar Jackson, 6-3 jr. G/F; Milton Simmons, 6-2 jr. G.

On the court: The Lions were to have one starter back, senior Keith McGee, but the 2015 Democrat and Chronicle All-Greater Rochester guard transferred to Greece Arcadia. … Three of Leadership’s losses were to Aquinas, Bishop Kearney and, without a full lineup, to Division 2 leader Rochester Early College. … “We are full-throttle,” Simmons declared. “I’m trying to mesh these guys together. We’re coming along slowly, but surely.” … Scored 114 points against Monroe at Charlotte, Leadership’s homecourt. “Even when I had all of those stars, the highest total was 99,” Simmons said. … Leading scorers: Snow (22 ppg.), Mackey (16) and Ellis (12).

Coach: Jack Leasure, third year (23-22).

Current record: 5-3.

Starting lineup: Brendan Broderick, 5-11 sr. G; Jake Purcell, 6-2 sr. G; Isaiah Stewart, 6-7 fresh. F; Cam Wilson, 6-9 jr. F; Jones and Breedlove.

On the court: The Knights won Rush-Henrietta’s tournament, including 55-43 against the host school. McQuaid put together a 14-2 run early in the fourth quarter of the championship game. … “We’re a team that is very talented but the three games that we lost (at home versus Aquinas, at Edison and at Buffalo St. Joseph’s), we were in situations our kids weren’t used to,” Leasure said. … Leasure describes a well-balanced offensive team able to turn to shooters, post players and drivers to the basket. … Outrebounded all but two opponents this season, Aquinas and Rush-Henrietta. … Buzz about the team starts with Stewart; Leasure praises the forward’s decision-making, in addition to his talent.

Sean Riley sets Monroe County high school diving record

Sean Riley, a senior with the Pittsford boys swimming team, set a Monroe County league diving record with his score Tuesday night.

Riley had a score of 379.20 after his six dives at Pittsford Mendon during a dual meet versus Hilton, the highest in the state so far. Webster’s Marc Carlton set the old league record at 363.05 in 2000, and went on to win the state title. Riley’s score also is a pool record at Mendon.

Riley was a National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association All-American after the 2014-15 season. During the most recent college commitment period in November, he signed a letter of intent to attend and dive at the University of Louisville.

Riley, a co-captain at Pittsford this season, finished seventh in last year’s 11-dive event during the state championships. He qualified for this year’s state meet Dec. 19 at the Shenendehowa Invitational, where he finished in first place, and he set a pool record at Canandaigua earlier this season.

Trent Jackson of Franklin, right, dribbles past two Lyons defenders, including Jim Boeheim, left, in the 1961 Section V Class AA semifinals. Franklin won the game but lost to Webster in the championship.

Long before he was a well-known college basketball coach at Syracuse University going toe-to-toe with the likes of John Thompson of Georgetown or winning the 2003 NCAA championship with Carmelo Anthony and Gerry McNamara leading the way, Jim Boeheim made his mark as a player at Lyons Central.

The Lions went 48-10 during Boeheim’s three-year varsity run, winning Wayne-Finger Lakes Championships in his junior and senior season. Boeheim averaged 19.3 points as a junior and 24.8 as a senior and finished his career with 1,012 points.

Lyons played in the largest sectional classification at this time and reached the semifinals in 1961 before losing to a Franklin team led by Trenton Jackson, one of the finest high school athletes to ever come out of Rochester, and the finals in 1962 before losing by a point to East Rochester in double overtime.

Fast forward to today, and Boeheim returns to the Syracuse University sidelines for Saturday’s game against North Carolina in the Carrier Dome. He missed the previous nine games while serving an NCAA suspension.

Syracuse University basketball coach Jim Boeheim, center, was the guest speaker at the 1987 Gannett Sports Excellence Awards Dinner. Boeheim is flanked by Calvin Johnson of Clyde-Savannah and Beth Walrath of Brockport at the Mapledale Party House.

Jackson’s athletic feats rank among the best of any Section V athlete. He attended Franklin High School, where he set the national high school record in the 100-yard dash (9.4 seconds). He went on to the University of Illinois, where he lettered in indoor track, football, basketball, outdoor track and baseball. He also represented the United States in the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo, was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team but opted to play in the NFL for Washington and Philadelphia before returning to Rochester coach and teach and start a family.

Jackson compiled a 388-181 record and won six sectional championships as basketball coach at Franklin, reaching the state semifinals in 1993 and ’96. He coached his daughters in track and field and son in basketball and is a member of the Section V basketball, football and track and field halls of fame. He died on March 25, 2007 at age 65.

Trent Jackson won 388 games and six sectional basketball championships at Franklin High School, his alma mater.

Coach: Roger Klimek, 20th year (217-197).

Current record: 6-3.

Classification/2014-15 finish: A1/ lost to Wilson Magnet in quarterfinals.

Starters back: Zach D’Arpino, 5 feet-10 inches, senior G; Dan Freese, 6-2 sr. F; Reggie Clark, 5-10 sr. G; Fidel Norris, 6-1 sr. F;

Starting lineup: Keith McGee, 6-2 sr. F; D’Arpino, Freese, Clark and Norris.

On the court: The Titans seem as experienced as can be expected, with an all-senior lineup and at least two others who have played significant minutes: Drew Freese, a 6-5 forward and 6-4 forward Jon Dueker. … McGee, a 2015 Democrat and Chronicle All-Greater Rochester Team member at Leadership Academy in Rochester after a vote by coaches in Section V, has provided a jolt. Arcadia had a hole in its lineup after the graduation of Jon Wilson. “(McGee) makes us a contender, without a doubt,” Klimek said. … The Titans needed more than McGee to lead the entire way against Irondequoit and put together a four-game win streak. Arcadia also lost to Greece Athena after a buzzer-beater. “We can all shoot threes pretty well,” Klimek said. … Freese, the team’s leading rebounder, produced double-digit scoring and rebounding in two of the team’s previous three games. … Arcadia played the first of two games against Batavia on Jan. 8. … Leading scorers: McGee (21.4 points per game), Clark (15.9) and D’Arpino (9.0).

Pittsford girls swim coach Marty Keating was one of 22 winners nationwide of the National Coach of the Year award given by the National Federation of State High School Associations Coaches Association.

The federation has been presenting the award since 1982 and honors the top 10 coaches in girls sports and top 10 coaches in boys sports for each school year. There were two bonus award winners this time, which honored accomplishments in the 2014-15 school year. Keating’s Panthers won their 14th straight Section V championship last fall, completing a fifth straight season in which they were unbeaten in dual meets.

The Panthers had 16 girls competing at states last fall. Keating was named the Democrat and Chronicle’s All-Greater Rochester Coach of the Year, an honor he also earned in 2013. His girls teams have won 23 sectional titles.

A swim coach for 42 years, Keating guided the Pittsford Mendon boys from 1973-92 and has coached the Pittsford girls since 1974. A Pittsford resident, he’s a retired Rochester City School District math teacher who graduated from East High, Monroe Community College and also earned degrees from Rochester Institute of Technology and The College at Brockport.

“The Pittsford Athletic Department would like to congratulate coach Keating on his award,” Pittsford athletic director Scott Barker said. “There is not a coach that I am aware of who has dedicated more of his time and energy for the betterment of his athletes.”

Pittsford girls swim coach Marty Keating has been coaching the sport for 42 years.

The weather is finally cold this winter but high school sports are heating up, highlighted by three showdowns in three different sports.

On Wednesday night in Fairport, there’s a boys basketball showdown as the unbeaten Red Raiders host Aquinas in a non-league game that’s a rematch of last year’s Section V Class AA championship. The Little Irish won that game, 63-49, on their way to reaching the state semifinals. These are two of Section V’s best defensive teams. Fairport was No. 1 in the Democrat and Chronicle‘s large-school coaches’ poll last month and Aquinas was tied for second.

The Little Irish took an 8-1 record into Monday night’s matchup at Bishop Timon of Section VI and Fairport was 9-0 headed to Gates Chili. Senior guard Earnest Edwards (17 points per game), a star receiver/runner for the state champion football team, leads Aquinas in scoring but has support from 6-foot-3 junior guard Jalen Pickett (14.1 ppg/7.6 rebounds), 6-6 senior Jason Hawkes (12.3 ppg/6.4 rpg) and senior guard David Vito (10.4 ppg).

Fairport is led by do-it-all junior guard Dan Masino and 6-3 senior guard Matthew Keenan. They average about 18 and 17 points per game, respectively, and are among coach Scott Fitch’s top 3-point threats.

On Tuesday in Penfield, the Hilton girls (9-2) find how well they stack up against Section V’s best, Penfield (9-1). The Patriots are winning by an average margin of 28.6 points. The only single-digit win was a 63-55 victory over Victor in a Monroe County Division I game. Its only loss was, 58-54, to Section VIII’s Peekskill in a holiday tournament.

One of Hilton’s two losses was to Victor, 53-51, in early December. The other was a 61-52 slip-up against Fairport on Dec. 29.

Boston College-bound senior forward Emma Guy (18 ppg), future Seton Hall player Ali Fitzgerald (12) and sophomore guard Makaila Wilson (12 ppg) power Penfield, ranked No. 1 in the latest D&C poll. Hilton is No. 5. Coach Jeff Eichas’ Hilton team needs to play its best to pull off an upset. The Cadets are coming off Friday’s 52-47 overtime victory over Greece Athena. Senior guard Cameron Graupman, who averages 21.4 points, scored 32 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. She’s committed to play next season at the College of St. Rose, a Division II program in Albany.

Finally at 5:15 p.m. Thursday in Fairport, No. 1 Pittsford travels to No. 2 Fairport as the top two boys swimming teams in the latest Section V poll square off in a dual meet that’ll decide the Monroe County Division I title. The Panthers, who’ve won 13th straight sectional titles, breezed to a win last weekend at the Fab 4 Invitational in Bath. They had 610 points and runner-up Brockport, 391. The teams split winning the 12 events. Senior Arthur Fan (100-yard butterfly, 100 backstroke), named Swimmer of the Meet at the Section V Class A championships last year, was a double-winner for Pittsford.
