Cameron Graupman, a senior guard for the Cadets, became only the second girl in school history on Tuesday to reach 1,000 career points.

Cameron Graupman, a senior guard for the Cadets, became only the second girl in school history on Tuesday to reach 1,000 career points.

Cameron Graupman has committed to the College of St. Rose in Albany, so the All-Monroe County guard has her scholarship, and now she has her 1,000 points.

The Hilton guard became the first Cadets player in 14 years to eclipse that mark while scoring 27 points in a season-opening 68-37 romp over Webster Schroeder. Graupman joins only one other girl, Kristen Clark (Class of 1999) in the 1,000-point club. The three Hilton boys who reached 1,000 are Dave Heise (1993), Carlton Moore (1996) and Ryan Mee (2001). She went over 1,000 on a pull-up jumper on the left side of the court. Graupman is known for her 3-point marksmanship, so it makes sense that the sixth-year varsity player’s favorite NBA star is Steph Curry.

Girls Athlete of the Week: Cameron Graupman

We’ll be running more on girls basketball locally next week, but Graupman should be among the area’s best players. All 16 of her first-team All-Greater Rochester picks last year were seniors, so there’s a whole new batch of players we’re ready to watch. Graupman is atop the list in Monroe County along with Penfield’s Emma Guy (Boston College) and Irondequoit’s Kylee Kanealey, who had 18 points, 15 rebounds, 4 steals and 4 blocks in Tuesday’s season-opening rout of Greece Arcadia.

Graupman, who made an amazing 3-point shot after a mad dash at Greece Athena to win a game last year, initially was headed to Niagara University but instead is going east to St. Rose, the Division II program where Section V alums Karissa Birthwright (Greece Odyssey), Zoe McDonald (Romulus) and Ashley Vanderwall (Pal-Mac) are freshmen. Aquinas graduate Nicole Bini was a senior on last year’s St. Rose squad. I remember the pipeline to Albany starting in the 1990s with Canandaigua graduate, Colleen (Sheridan) Tauriello.

Hunter Barber

Hunter Barber

Hunter Barber nearly bowled a 300 game last month.

Then on Monday, Barber approached his first perfect score again, this time during a high school match in Section V at Clover Lanes in Brighton.

“The last three balls (for the 10th frame) the whole place was quiet,” the Rush-Henrietta junior said.

And Barber?

“I was nervous, shaking,” he said.

Barber closed with three strikes for the 300, and was the biggest contributor in a record-breaking performance by Rush-Henrietta against Webster Schroeder.

Derek Mosher (269), Josh Dingman (278), Aaron Dion (194), Mike Parmeter (257) and Barber knocked down a total of 1,298 pins during that one game, a Section V record confirmed by sectional girls bowling coordinator Mark Foeder. Barber finished with a three-game series of 713.

Rush-Henrietta’s total is 15 shy of the national record for one game by a high school team, and five short of the state record held by Colonie of Section II. Foeder said that three or four 300 games a year are usually rolled in Section V.

Rush-Henrietta is in the lineup of matches on Friday at Clover Lanes.

Donny Glavin

McQuaid senior Donovan “Donny” Glavin, running “relaxed and recovered” from a long postseason, finished 41st at the 12th annual Nike Cross Nationals high school cross country championship Saturday in Portland, Oregon.

“I feel so good,” he told his coach, Todd Stewart, by phone afterward, “that I think I could go out and race it again.”

Glavin ran the 3.1-mile race on the rain-soaked Glendoveer Golf Course in 15 minutes, 44.5 seconds and was sixth finisher from New York state in the field of 199. He is the eighth Section V boy to run the event; his time is third-fastest among them and his finish sixth-best.

“I had two hard workouts at Cobbs Hill Monday and Tuesday,” Glavin said, “but I took the day off to travel Wednesday and felt very relaxed and strong today. I wasn’t nervous at all. I just wanted to go out and not make a fool of myself. This whole experience is just awesome.”

“He ran really great,” Stewart said. “He recovered well from last week’s race. His body held up for the challenge, given going out to the West Coast and all. It’s really tough when you don’t have the team with you. It’s deflating not to have anyone to train with.”

Jim Castor, retired assistant sports editor of the Democrat and Chronicle, has covered running in the Rochester area for more than five decades. He can be reached at jcastor@jimcastor.com

Science teacher Matt Greene was arrested on Friday as a result of the police investigation and given an appearance ticket, according to the Sheriff’s Office. He is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 5

Greene, who also works as a swim coach for both the boys and girls teams, has been placed on administrative leave and is prohibited from visiting school district grounds.

The investigation is ongoing.

Tyler Olbrich, a junior, has played with the Aquinas varsity for three seasons.

The annual Army-Navy nationally televised college football game is sort of must-see TV for Tyler Olbrich.

“This year will be the first that it has new meaning to me, I guess,” the 16-year-old Aquinas junior said of the matchup Dec. 12.

If all goes as planned before Olbrich’s graduation from high school, the Greece resident will receive a nomination from a member of Congress to attend the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and play Division I lacrosse.

A defender with three varsity seasons at Aquinas, Olbrich gave a verbal commitment to Army coaches last summer. Olbrich chose West Point in Orange County over six more common or traditional colleges.

“The reality is that you have four years of school, then you have a five-year commitment behind it,” said Tyler’s father, Pat Olbrich.

Tyler Olbrich, the starting running back on the state championship Aquinas football team, said the prospect of five years of military service was not something he was worried about.

“I decided this over about a year,” Olbrich said. “The beginning of my sophomore year, in September, is when I first had contact with the coach and I made my commitment in late July.

“I really thought it out and I just thought it was the best place for me to be. Growing up, it was never like I always wanted to go to the military, but I’m not afraid of it. I trust whatever training that they give me, I’ll be prepared for whatever I have to do.”

Aquinas teammates celebrate Tyler Olbrich's 34-yard touchdown reception, a screen pass he turned into a score against Liverpool, during the Class AA West state semifinal.

Aquinas teammates celebrate Tyler Olbrich’s 34-yard touchdown reception, a screen pass he turned into a score against Liverpool, during the Class AA West state semifinal.

Olbrich, if he receives the required recommendation, plans to sign a national letter of intent to play college lacrosse when the signing period for that other sport reopens in November.

“It was definitely a decision that I made based on my future,” Olbrich said.  “It’s a great lacrosse program, one of the top 25 in the country. I just didn’t see a better opportunity for my future after college.

“There’s just so many opportunities that it provides. It’s a great education. I’m going to school for free, and in lacrosse there’s not a lot of opportunities where you get full scholarships, so that was a big piece of it, too.”

Pat Olbrich, who has coached the Aquinas JV lacrosse team the last nine years, played lacrosse at SUNY Geneseo and Penn Yan Academy. Ted Georgalas, a volunteer assistant on the Army lacrosse staff, also once coached Pat Olbrich.

“I never saw this coming, so when Army approached Tyler, I was taken aback at first,” Pat Olbrich said. ” ‘Just come and see what we have to offer before you make any decision,’ that was the best advice anyone gave him. We took the process very slowly.

“It blew me away. The support cadets are given at the academy is just amazing. As a parent, his father, that’s what sold me.”

The Olbrichs visited West Point three times, taking the opportunities to sit in on classes and watch Army lacrosse practices. Tyler Olbrich stayed with 22-year-old junior Marc Pettrone during one of the visits. Pettrone is a former teammate of Tyler’s older brother Jonathan, a sophomore at Nazareth College, and plays defense on the Army lacrosse team.

“We work hard for what we get,” Pettrone said. “We like to think that we will be locked into the top 25 because we like to play hard. Our coach (Joe Alberici) preaches that family aspect to it.

Pettrone said his experience in high school helped him fit in at West Point. He said both schools have a “family environment.”

“You don’t have anyone on the team looking out for themselves. They are going that extra mile for their brothers.”

Two groups of high school boys basketball coaches in Section V were asked to rank the top 10 large and small school teams as the season picks up steam.

Where does Greece Athena fall?  The Trojans won last season’s Section V Class A1 title, advanced to the state finals and lost all of its starting lineup to graduation, with the exception of Anthony Lamb, the 2015 Democrat and Chronicle All-Greater Rochester Player of the Year.

Which school will emerge as the team to beat in Class AA? Aquinas was an undefeated sectional champion, but four starters are gone from that team. Does this mean a change or two at the top?

Check back our website Thursday night to also see how coaches rank the top Class B, C and D teams in Section V.

Mendon’s Erin Lyons (20), left, and Sutherland’s Caitlin Ryan battle for a rebound during the 2010 Rainbow Classic.

A rivalry within a town does not appear to be the best time to highlight a community.

Then again, the Mendon versus Sutherland high school girls and boys basketball games have turned into a shining moment for Pittsford.

Sutherland and Mendon meet twice a season, with the first matchups taking place at University of Rochester as part of the Rainbow Classic for the benefit of Golisano Children’s Hospital.

An estimated $368,000 has been raised after 14 Rainbow Classics as of Sept. 9, according to Pittsford athletic director Scott Barker, who hopes to reach $400,000 after this year’s game. Fundraising continues during related events until the spring.

The 15th Rainbow Classic inside the U of R’s Palestra is Dec. 18. The varsity girls game is 6 p.m., followed by the varsity boys game. Mendon’s boys team is coached Robert Nally, the younger brother of Sutherland boys coach John Nally.

Admission is $10, and that covers both games. Sell-outs are common, as 1,600 tickets are sold.

Aquinas WR Earnest Edwards attracting more recruiters

Teammates of Aquinas star Earnest Edwards wondered before and during the high school football season why the talented wide receiver had not received more athletic scholarship offers.

They watched Edwards, a receiver and running back, score 28 touchdowns this season, including four during the first half of the Class AA state final won by Aquinas.

The number of college teams interested in Edwards, who is 5 feet-10 inches and 170 pounds, is up to six. State University of New York at Buffalo gave Edwards an offer during the summer. Wagner, Old Dominion, Rhode Island, Monmouth and Maine also have shown interest.

High school football players around the nation can formally accept scholarship offers when the signing period opens Feb. 3.

5 things to watch in Section V boys basketball

Athena's Anthony Lamb shoots over Wilson's Deandre Adullah (33).

Athena’s Anthony Lamb shoots over Wilson’s Deandre Adullah (33).

If Anthony Lamb believed he received a lot of attention last season, the 2015 Democrat and Chronicle All-Greater Rochester Boys Basketball Player of the Year might want to brace himself.

Lamb, a senior at Greece Athena who gave a verbal commitment to play at the University of Vermont in September, is the lone starter back with a Trojans team that reached the Class A state tournament final.

That means opponents should have an easier time focusing their defenses on Lamb, a 6-foot-6 senior forward, who averaged 20 points and 13 rebounds last season. Lamb is the lone proven scorer back with the Trojans (2-0).

No more penetrations of defenses by three-time AGR point guard Jay Sarkis to work off. The threat of shooter Zac DiSalvo, who scored 1,000 points at the varsity level, is also gone.

How will Lamb handle the extra attention?  How will Athena coach Jim Johnson, whose teams have won 409 games in 30 years, handle teams trying to take away or at least slow down Lamb?

Top 10 large schools boys basketball capsules

Here are four other things to watch in Section V boys basketball this season:

2. How far does Fairport go? The Red Raiders, Class AA sectional finalists in 2015, were the choice for No. 1 in the Democrat and Chronicle‘s first Large Schools Coaches Poll of the season.

Fairport's Dan Masino returns for Fairport.

Fairport’s Dan Masino returns for Fairport.

That doesn’t exactly send this season’s sectional champion trophy to Fairport. There is a long regular season to play out, but there are reasons to be excited about this team.

Start with junior Dan Masino, who was deemed one of the area’s top 15 players last season after he averaged 15.5 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. He’s back, presumably stronger and wiser, for what will be an already heady player’s third varsity season.

Matthew Keenan, a 6-3 senior guard, has been around and productive, too. Masino and Keenan have already played in two sectional finals, and certainly want a different result.

Roth: Fairport’s Dan Masino is from famed hoops family

3. Change leads to more change at Aquinas?

Aquinas' Jalen Pickett is only starter back.

Aquinas’ Jalen Pickett is only starter back.

Unselfish play and a deep rotation were two reasons that Aquinas became an undefeated sectional champion and went on to the state final four.

Jalen Pickett, a 6-3 junior guard, is the only starter back. Does the approach to win games change at Aquinas? Even if the answer is no, does it mean this team wins at the rate of sectional title contender?

The good news for Aquinas is that new starters like 5-10 senior guard Earnest Edwards, 6-5 senior forward Jamir Jones and 6-6 junior forward Jason Hawkes played significant minutes in 2014-15.

4. “Old” crew of Cougars: A group of coaches voted North Rose-Wolcott No. 1 among the small schools, after the Cougars in the Wayne County league jumped out to a 5-0 start.

Garrett Hoyt, a 6-3 senior, 6-0 senior Connor Pendleton, 6-2 senior Luke Gerstner and 6-3 junior guard Tyler Norris all are back in this year’s starting lineup for the Cougars, a sectional finalist last season in Class B2.

This is the fourth varsity season for Hoyt, and third for Pendleton and Norris, who was a starter as a freshman. Elijah Durham, a 6-1 senior, was the first forward off the bench last season. Six of the top seven players in the team’s rotation are seniors.

5. What type of juice does Edison have?:Inventors senior guard Raliek Redd felt snubbed after he was not voted on to last season’s AGR team. Edison coach Jacob Scott agreed.

Redd, who averaged 20 points and five assists for a 12-8 team last season, is motivated. The arrival of 6-5 senior Donte Crumpler from Charlotte and junior guard Marique Simkin should be strong boosts to the Edison lineup.

Will it be enough to boost Edison further in the sectional tournament?
